Newport Jazz Fest starts tonight, which is a real shame because I’m still recovering from my folk-filled weekend. To rally, here is the official trailer forĀ Jazz on a Summer’s Day, the 1960 documentary set at the 1958 festival. Filled with fantastic sailing scenes and clips from America’s Cup races of the same year, it packs a generation’s worth of heat and music and that peculiar mid-century energy. Notable: Eisenhower styles that would make the most unabashed preppy weep, and the Yale College student ensemble playing “Dixieland” as they drive around Newport in a jalopy.
If only our generation were half this cool.
