Broad stripes and bright stars.
This evening Suzanne and I met to view the American Beauty exhibit at FIT. Among other sartorial gems, Yeohlee’s white cotton ball gown with bungee cord train stole my heart and highlighted what American designers do best: clean, functional sportswear. A scary security guard put the kibbosh on photo-taking before I could even whip out my iPhone, so here are some star-spangled banners to tide you over until I track down snaps of the suits and silks.

Said Patricia Mears, deputy director of the museum at FIT, “The garments in American Beauty are connected by one overriding criterion: They have all been created by designers who utilized the craft of dressmaking as the point of departure to create beautiful, wearable objects.”
The exhibit opened last Friday and runs through January 9, 2010.
