Anonymous said: Huge fan of your blog--particularly your relationship/commitment to running. I have been asked to run my first half marathon this April, and I am very excited about the idea but nervous about the follow-through. I have never run more than 2 miles in one swoop, and I'm afraid of not being able to do it. Also, I am in pretty good shape, and I enjoy varying my workouts. I am afraid that running on a schedule will change my attitude towards exercise, and plateau my fitness efforts. Any tips? Thanks!

Thank you, and congratulations on taking the half-marathon plunge. You are getting a late start with training, but all is not lost. Here’s a good training plan from Runner’s World and another from Hal Higdon. Count back from race day and jump in feet first—start tonight! And don’t worry about hitting a plateau or burning out; it takes much longer than a few months of heavy running to get sick of the sport. Still, any good plan encourages cross-training; try to do something active (that does not involve pounding pavement) at least twice a week. For other running tips and inspiration, click here. Best of luck!
